Anoka Cannabis Company
Building Construction is Complete as of January 2026
On May 22, 2025, the City of Anoka hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the construction of the building that will house the Anoka Cannabis Company, a city-owned cannabis dispensary. Construction is now underway at 839 East River Road, adjacent to the city-owned and operated Better Values Liquor store. The City worked with Oertel Architects and RJM Construction on the project.
Given Anoka’s long history in the liquor sales business since 1937, along with the introduction of low dose cannabis beverages and edibles at the liquor store in July of 2023, the decision to establish and manage a cannabis dispensary seemed a natural progression. Earlier in 2025, the City Council approved the project by a 4-1 vote.
Revenue from the dispensary has the potential to be directed to help fund city parks, improvements to Green Haven Golf Course, reduce the levy, and more.
Unlike the city-owned liquor operation, the City will not be allowed to have a monopoly on adult use cannabis per state law; the City will have to allow for two privately owned business due to its population.
The building inspection passed in January 2026 and a ribbon cutting was held on February 5, 2026, announcing the grand opening.
